I want to start a discussion on the contributions that Africans (currently African Americans) have made to American civilization.

Historically, Africans were present with whites from the vary start of their "discovery" of America. Esteban, an African, served with Columbus as his navigator, bringing him to the shores of this western world. Since then, African descendents have participated in every war (during and after slavery). Most notably, however, is the fact that American invention and ingenuity has outpaced all other white nations of the world. The only major difference between America and those other nations, is the significant presence of African people.

Even during slavery, significant inventions emerged from the African's in America. However, the boon of American invention didn't occur until African's became free in America. In the early 1900's came the telephone, the automobile, and many more life changing products and processes.

It is possible to prove that without the African, separate from the contributions of "free labor", America would not be the great nation that it has become.

It's important to realize that Africans and Europeans have engaged one another for over 2,000 years in a variety of relationships. Africans have played prominent roles within the Catholic Church since it's inception, under the Emperor Constantine. African-Americans have played instrumental roles in shaping American church life, through it's gospel music, it's service to God and it's ministry. African-Americans have played key roles in American Government during and since slavery, once allowed to participate.

In regard to the American economy, black businesses have existed during and after slavery as well.
