Re: was hannibal black?
In Response To: was hannibal black? ()

Again on a debate which goes against all that is known - and well known - about Hannibal, Carthage, and North Africa.

The people who founded Carthage were Phoenicians. They were seamen and traders, and did not mingle much with the North african population of now Tunisia, which were Berbers non-negroids, non-caucasians, Mechtoid people of Mediterranean type.

Hannibal was not black of skin, nor was he a Negro.

He was a Phoenician, and there is no datum on his ancestry that shows any intermarriage with Berbers. However, in his army he had a number of enlisted or nercenary Berbers. The region was still inhabited by elephants at the time of the Punic wars, so the famous elephants that he used were local animals.
There is no report of black people living in and around Carthage, or participating in the Punic wars.

There is an excellent thesis from an African scholar from Senegal on the period. I will try to find the reference.
