A faceless response to a faceless enemy

The policies of the IMF have caused structural adjustments in many third world countries where nationally own companies were forced to privatize and allow capitalists that are based mainly in the US and Europe to access the profits of these companies. In addition, many US companies have used their influence to force other producers out of the market; for example, banana producers in the Caribbean are presently facing loss of market opportunities in Europe because of pressure from US companies.

There are lots of talk of globalization and freeing up of markets, but the rich continue to get richer and the poor continue to suffer. Third world Governments claim that they have to accede to the demands of market force even though people are loosing jobs, but these market forces have no face they are just concepts. However the pain that people feel because of market forces are very real. As a result, most third world countries feel helpless because the forces that propagate modern world trade are faceless.

The involvement of the CIA is faceless when in the name of securing American interests it will fund a small interest group in a country while knowing that their funding will lead to civil war and general instability. Many countries are presently experiencing this type of CIA influenced civil war, but the CIA acts mainly through third party agents, so their actions becomes faceless.

Now on September 11 the US world trade center, a major player in the generation of global market forces, was struck by faceless terrorists because it is not clear where these people came from. Similarly the pentagon, a symbol of the US military power that the CIA uses to destabilize countries that dare to resist US policies, was struck by faceless terrorists.

A war between faceless foes is in effect taking war beyond the realm of simple physical confrontation to the realm of ideas. Fighting someone without a face can lead to paranoia and general madness. The world has now entered into a very volatile era where a country as powerful as the US is about to engage themselves in a war with an enemy that they can’t see. The paranoia and madness that can result from this scenario is certainly mind-boggling.

It is clear to this observer that the faceless monster that is fueled by US economic and military policies in turn creates a second faceless monster of oppressed people wanting vengeance. These two monsters have been growing over many years and an all out war between then can lead to tremendous suffering around the globe.

The big question to me is whether the US president is wise enough to take actions that will reduce the size of these monsters. Or whether he will take actions that will greatly increase the rate of growth and size of these monsters? This question will certainly be answered one way or the other in the coming months.
