WEll I don't know what subsaharan-African groups were famous in the ancient world other than Cushites (in what is now Sudan), Zanzibar'S INHABITANTS and Ethiopians Both groups extended marginally imporant empires during ancient. By the Middle Ages and modern times the Cushites were pretty obscure. Ethipoia fared a bit better through the many centuries down to today. It is worth noting that Ethiopians have been genetically shown to be mostly black but a lttle white too (Yemenite white). Zanzibar barely mildly important even in modern times.
